Means-tested welfarism is the failed religion of the Democratic party. It creates stigma and resentment. It dehumanizes and inftantilizes recipients with red tape, bureaucratic hoops, monitoring, and benefit restrictions (i.e. what kind of food you can purchase). It punishes recipients for gainful employment with cuts or withdrawals of benefits, creating a work disincentive and a poverty trap. It is wasteful in the bloated government administration it employs. The state-level implementation of these programs has actually increased the racial wealth gap in some states. And its cracks are so large that 13 million people living in poverty receive no benefits at all.

This is a failed and broken system, and it's time we stopped clinging to it. It's time for universal basic income. No bad incentives, no dehumanization or stigma, no government bloat, less bureaucracy. No reporting requirements. No case managers. No waiting in line at some government office. No restrictions on what you can and can't do with the money. A universal floor under which nobody can fall. Nobody.

Everything that means-tested welfare has promised to deliver and failed can be better achieved with universal basic income. We are at a level of collective wealth and technological advancement where we can easily make this move. It's time.
